Seven Great Casual Games for Your New iPad

As the proud owner of a new iPad, you’re doubtless scouring the App Store for as many games as you can handle, eager to find as many gems as you can.  With more than 100,000 dedicated iPad applications, this could prove a lengthy task, so to give you a helping hand here are seven games we recommend you download right now.

The difference with this list is it’s aimed at the casual gamer, someone who doesn’t want to play complex or hugely time consuming games, but instead wants a fun time-waster.  You’ll notice the absence of Angry Birds, which we assume you’ve already purchased!

Pinball HD.

A fantastic pinball game for the iPad, which although is great for a few minutes play, has hidden depths thanks to several tables, challenges and a strong desire to come back and beat your high score!  The 3D graphics are excellent, but it’s the physics which really impress.  $0.99/£0.69.

Words with Friends HD.

Available for the iPhone and in an ad-supported free version, this is an alternative to Scrabble which can be played online against other, human, players.  It’s a Zynga backed game so there’s plenty of Facebook integration and the clever multiple game feature means you can be as prolific or as casual as you like.  A great way to start out in multiplayer online gaming.  $2.99/£1.99.

Compression HD.

While you could buy Tetris for the iPad, you’re better off grabbing this similar puzzle game.  In Compression HD you need to destroy your blocks as expected, except the game fights back!  The graphics and soundtrack portray a far darker and more dangerous world than the more friendly Tetris, and the unlimited levels will keep you entertained for a long time.  Free.

Labyrinth 2 HD.

What started out as a simple reinvention of the classic pub game has become a massive, community-driven, accelerometer-controlled super game with thousands of levels, multiplayer support and a level generator so you can join in the fun.  It looks really easy, but thanks to the incredibly accurate tilt controls you’ll need to be very precise to beat it!  $7.99/£6.99.

Super Mega Worm.

A universal game which plays slightly better on the iPad than it does on the iPhone.  You control a massive worm who needs to eat humans, cows and jeeps to survive; except they’re fighting back and you’ll need to use your burrowing skills to survive!  Fantastic 8-bit graphics and audio, very addictive gameplay and a darkly comic streak make this a must own.  $0.99/£0.69.

Fruit Ninja HD.

It doesn’t get much simpler than Fruit Ninja, where the idea is to slash the onscreen fruit and rack up huge high scores.  The multi-touch control is spot-on and the multiplayer mode gives the game a much-needed extra dimension.  $2.99/£1.99.

Geared 2.

Another universal app for the iPhone and iPad, here you need to connect the different sized cogs together to get them all moving, and it’s a much bigger challenge than it sounds!  Like Labyrinth, this is a game which has grown exponentially since its original release, with hundreds of user-created levels.  $2.99/£1.99.
