According to a report by China Times, the iPhone 5 will be released in the second week of September with 4 million units set to hit the streets at launch. The same source also claims that the iPad 3 has been delayed until after Thanksgiving due to component shortages.

This release date for the iPhone 5 does seem like a popular choice with many rumors now pointing to a September launch. This would also coincide with the fall release of iOS 5; although the official start of fall this year is September 23. We also know that Apple is recruiting temporary sales staff throughout the UK, starting in mid August. This would allow them to be trained to Apple’s exacting standards, prior to the iPhone 5 launch.

The delay to the iPad 3 is a little more mystifying, not quite sure how an unannounced product that is rumored to be released outside of its normal product refresh cycle can be delayed!

The China Times has a hit and miss record with Apple rumors so take this one with the usual pinch of salt. It does however have close links with Apple’s supply chain in China.

The US Patent and Trademark office just published fourteen new patents recently awarded to Apple. Among them are design patents for the MacBook Air, iPhone 3G, Apple remote, their battery charger design, and many more.

Considering Apple recently sued Samsung for copying the iPhone and iOS look and feel, these patents could end up with many other manufacturers in court. Lots of notebooks have recently mimicked the design of the MacBook Air or other variations of the MacBook line. None of the patents seem too design specific. If Apple has the ability to sue based on the overall appearance and design, I definitely think we’ll see more lawsuits springing up sooner rather than later.

Budget iPhone photos leak?

We’ve been hearing about the iPhone nano, aka the budget iPhone, for a while now and Vietnamese set Tinhte might finally have scored a prototype.

3 pictures below are photographs handset is said to be the next version of iPhone 4 from a very reliable source. Really hard to convince you to believe this because it is exactly like the iPhone 4 white appearance. Some other information that you want to transfer to you is that this machine seems to run faster than the iPhone 4, lighter weight and two glass front and back seem to have been replaced by two plastic sheets, type of sensation and cry other than the iPhone 4. According to information leakage, predictable from the English website, the more likely Apple will introduce the iPhone 4s (cheap version) and the iPhone 5 next month. And it looks like the iPhone that you see below is the iPhone 4s.

That Apple was working on a cheaper iPhone for new entrants and emerging markets has always been assumed — because it makes sense — but how exactly they’d go about doing it was and is the big question. Just like the MacBook Air and iPad are to the netbook, Apple has a way of filling holes in the product line-up in unpredictable but often high effective ways.

Instead of making an iPhone physically smaller, or using iPhone 3GS parts, if these pictures prove to be genuine, and this prototype hasn’t already been abandoned, the idea of plastic instead of glass and possibly other lower-end components could very easily make for a cheaper iPhone that’s still binary compatible with the existing App Store apps and perhaps even current accessories (and Jailbreaks?).

But then would iPhone 5 have to look different so fashionistas don’t worry about it being mistaken for the cheap phone?

Skyfire Labs have released their new iPhone and iPad app, Skyfire VideoQ, as a method of watching flash videos.

Skyfire VideoQ™ is a new kind of App that lets you watch Flash Videos while browsing with Safari or any iPad/iPhone browser! Simply click the ‘Mail Link to this Page’ on any browser to email the video URL to your ‘Queue’ and open the App.

Simply register your email address in the App. Use the “Mail Link to this Page” button in Safari or any browser to email a webpage with a Flash video to video@skyfire.com. Videos sent from your email address will appear in your Skyfire VideoQ.Copy the URL of a webpage that has a Flash video and open Skyfire VideoQ. Install our bookmarklet into Safari. Once you find a page with a Flash video, just use the bookmarket to send the page to your Skyfire VideoQ.

One of the biggest complaints about iOS is the incompatibility with Flash. Skyfire VideoQ may not completely fill that gap, but since a huge amount of Flash content on the web is video, it’s a great solution for many people.

Skyfire VideoQ is available on the iPhone and iPad for $1.99. Screenshots and video after the break.

The BBC iPlayer (Global) iPad app is now available outside of the UK for the first time with the launch in eleven countries. The iPad app is now available in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. Still no love for the United States, Canada or Australia; but the BBC does say that it will be available there too, later this year.

The iPlayer app will offer a limited amount of ad supported content for free but the majority or programs will be offered via a subscription model. The monthly cost would be €6.99 ($10) or a yearly fee of €49.99 ($72).

Watch a selection of the best classic and contemporary British shows on demand, including Doctor Who, Top Gear and Blue Planet. Download the app and explore plus enjoy free clips and taster episodes. Subscribe today for unlimited access – even when you’re offline.
Features: Watch high quality video and audio streaming over Wi-Fi or 3GDownload programmes to watch even when you’re not connectedEnjoy exclusive programmes that have never before been seen outside of the UKBrowse classic and contemporary programmes by Genre, Most popular, Just in and A-ZSet parental locks on content not suitable for kidsThe international app differs from the app which is available in the UK. It is being touted as an on-demand service rather than a catch-up service and will carry content from the previous month as well as a back catalogue of programs stretching back up to 60 years. It will also allow downloading of content directly to the iPad as well as access over 3G. This is something that the current UK app has been missing and heavily criticized for not having! Apparently the two apps have been developed by different departments within the BBC.

Photo Sharing App PicPlz Updated, Adds Two Filters

PicPlz has been updated to version 1.7.0, bringing with it two new filters and a new option to save your altered picture in your Photo Gallery.  The app is a cross-platform photo-sharing social network, where users can share snaps on PicPlz’s own site and via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Foursquare and plenty of others.

You can alter your photos using any of the included filters, and two new ones were added in this update: C-41 and Redscale.  You can see an example of each below, and both can be selected with or without a border too.

Saving images in your Photo Gallery once you’ve applied one of these filters is a mixed blessing, as if you’re anything like me you already save a non-HDR and an HDR version, so you can easily end up with at least three versions of the same picture!  Thankfully you can turn the option off under the settings, but I’d have rather seen a tickbox option when posting the image so I have the choice without going into the Settings.

PicPlz is free to download and is easily on a par with Instagram, and benefits from its cross-platform status.

Five Super Summer Multiplayer Games for Your iPhone and iPad

With summer already underway, there’s no better time for getting together with friends, which is also perfect for playing a few multiplayer games on your iPhone or iPad!  Thinking of multiplayer games often leads to shooters or racing games, but they don’t really fit in with a relaxed summer picnic, so we’ve selected five games which make perfect companions when lazily hanging out with friends.

Scrabble.

The classic board game is available for both the iPhone and the iPad, however if you and your friends all own iPhones (or iPod Touches) and have an iPad between you, then the smaller displays become your own personal letter tray!  It’s a great way to play and ensures you won’t lose any letter counters if you’re out and about.  Scrabble for the iPhone costs $2.99/£1.99, while the HD iPad version costs $9.99/£8.99, and the Tile Rack app is yours for free.

Foosball HD.

Another classic game which has been enjoyed with friends for many years!  It can be played on your own, however the game comes into its own when it’s one-on-one or even two-on-two!  The 3D graphics look good and the app has recently been tweaked to take advantage of the iPad 2’s superior graphical ability.  $2.99/£1.99.

Sketch n’ Guess.

There may not be an official Pictionary app available, but there are plenty of alternatives!  This is just one, and works entirely offline making it perfect for use outdoors if you don’t have a 3G connection.  The pen-and-paper graphical style really suits the game and drawings can even be saved to your Photo Gallery.  $1.99/£1.49.

MultiPong.

A cross between classic Pong and a pinball machine, with added multiplayer modes for up to four players!  The app is universal for the iPhone and iPad (except the iPhone version only supports up to two players), has Game Center support, Retina Display graphics and plenty of customization options.  $2.99/£1.99.

Uno.

Who doesn’t enjoy Uno?  This card game is ideal for whiling away a quiet afternoon, and Gameloft’s conversion is a good one, making great use of the iPhone and iPad’s multi-touch screen.  Both versions are the same price at the moment too, so if you like the idea of Uno without the actual cards, now is the time to grab it!  $0.99/£0.69.

casual, foosball, friends, Games, iPad, iPhone, multiplayer, multipong, scrabble, sketch n guess, summer, uno

TiPb.com Picks of the Week

Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game.

To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break!

As most of you know, I’m a huge fan of Dropbox and apps that capitalize on it by tying into the APIs to create interesting new services. I also find Apple’s own Voice Memos app lacking in that there’s no easy way to get those recordings off my iPhone short of syncing (for now). DropVox is a little app that solves this problem simply. All it does it record audio and throw it into your Dropbox for you. Using compressed .m4a files, the app fires up quickly and sends faster than you might expect. It’s not the kind of thing you’d use to record a full album in the studio, but it’s super handy for quick thoughts. You can also set it up to record immediately on launch, which makes the flow even faster (this is how I have it set up because when I’m using something like this, time is of the essence).

It’s a clean-looking app, with a singular function, and it does it well. Check it out.

My little girl loves singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star so she absolutely loves this app. “Twinkle Twinkle” tells the story of a friendship between a restless owl and a little star that watches over the forest. The simple touch animations are designed to help children relax. Touch the screen to watch the owl’s wing’s flap and hear the owl hoot. See the star spin around. Help the owl and the star fly across the sky with a flick of your finger!

It comes with different reading options as well as two videos showing the content of the book all beautifully rendered. It also includes a simple counting the stars game. If you have young children, they will love this app and story. Great for bedtimes!

Really, did you expect anything else? After OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, whose changes were as profound as they invisible to end users, OS X Lion finally brings some user experience refresh to Apple’s aging desktop operating system — and it brought it straight back from iOS. It’s not a gimmick either. Apple has spent decades trying to simplify and mainstream the computing appliance. What started with the Apple II in a garage has thus far come closest with iPad in 20 million homes. That’s not lost on Apple, Steve Jobs, or the OS X team. Lion is proof. We get full screen apps, LaunchPad which mimics the iOS home screen right down to folders and jigglies, saved state and auto-resume that blurs the distinction between open and closed apps, and multitouch gestures to swipe and pinch through it all. Even the built in apps, from the outstanding new 3-pain, threaded Mail, to the curious stitched leather iCal, look like their iPad equivalents.

It’s even distributed via the Mac App Store. For $30. For all your personal machines. (And you can bump that up to full on OS X Server for $50 more.)

Lion is not without it’s frustrations of course — beyond the above-mentioned stitched leather UI. Scrolling has been reversed, also to match iOS. Give it a week, however, and you’ll likely not want to go back. Pushing content really does feel more natural than pulling scroll bars (which Lion does its level best to hide anyway.)

Auto-restore, where every window comes flying back up when you re-start an app could potentially cause embarrassment depending on what kind of website you were last on, who you were last drafting an email too, or what video you last had playing, so user beware.

You can turn almost all of these fancy new features off in settings, but you can also get used to the brave new world of auto-saving, document versioning, sandbox securing, Mac App Store downloading wonder. It’s a glimpse at the future and Apple’s brought it to us today.

Bottom line, if you love iOS, you’ll love Lion. And if you want to no more, check out Ars Technicas epic 20,000 word review, courtesy of John Siracusa, which analyzes and critiques every byte and pixel from the controls to the code. You can even enjoy it on your iPad in ebook form if the mood strikes you.

Diptic is a triptych app, pure and simple: three images together in a single work of art. On your iPhone, you can use 2, 3, or 4 photos, and arrange them into a single piece. You can take a new photo from your iPhone’s camera as you go, choose a photo in your album, use one of your Facebook photos, or grab something from Flickr.

There are a series of frame layouts from which to choose, and all you have to do is drop your photos into the box. Once there, you can zoom or rotate so you have just what you want. You can even get artsy and traditional and use the same photo in each box, with only a portion showing in any one section. You have total control over the frame’s thickness and colour.

Diptic is great if you have trouble deciding which photo is the best – you can just use them all in a single image, or if you have pets or children, and like to show them off simultaneously.

It’s an extremely easy app to use, and offers lots of flexibility.

My pick of the week is Metal Gear Solid Touch (played on the iPad). This universal binary continues the Metal Gear Solid line, a game franchise I first looked at on the Playstation! This first person shooting game is a little different than some others – you aren’t moving through corridors or buildings. Instead, you are stationary, and you have to aim your gun by moving the target around on the screen. You have a couple of different kinds of guns (for sniping or closer combat) and the goal is simple – survive and kill your enemies. The interface is very very intuitive, although for a while I was expecting the target to appear wherever I tapped (it doesn’t, you have to move it around the screen by sliding). The graphics are outstanding, and all in all this was a fun way to waste many hours this week. I wish there was a little more variety in some of the levels (although in fairness, I haven’t gotten very far so maybe it changes). This game has been fluctuating in price between, although I missed out on the most recent sale. If you keep an eye on it, you might get it at a greatly reduced price sometime soon!

[$7.99 - iTunes link]

FX Photo Studio just got a big update and now it has a Masking Studio. This is exactly what this app needed! FX Photo Studio has nearly 200 different filters you can apply to your photos, but, unfortunately, not all of them look good on the entire photo. There are many times when one filters does wonders to the sky, another to buildings, and still another to skin, while simultaneously making the rest of the photos look worse. With Masking Studio, you can mask in (or out) the part of the photo you want (or don’t want) to be affected by the filter. I love it! Hopefully the next update will have a “soft brush” update to better blend the edges of the masks.

America is a country that is run on C8H10N4O2 (Caffeine) and it’s our crazy schedules and long work days that are to blame… Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an app that made the consumption of this popular potable even easier? Well, the good folks over at this little Seattle based coffee company called Starbucks have heard your cries and offer a solution… The Official Starbucks app.

The Starbucks app has recently gone through a major overhaul and is vastly better than the earlier versions. You now have the ability to completely control your Starbucks card collection, monitor your Gold Points, view nutrition facts, make and share custom drinks, find store locations and even buy gifts for people you’re fond of. The app also allows you to protect all of your super secret secrets with a passcode.

Now, you’re probably asking yourself “How this can help me improve my day to day life?” Well, let’s say you’re like me and your job requires you to travel a lot and work late into the night… We all know how lame that is. If i’m out of town and I need a quick Iced Soy Cinnamon Dolce Latte fix and I can’t find a Starbucks anywhere around me (which is highly unlikely if you’re on or around Earth). I can just pop out my phone, go straight to the Starbucks app and tap on the “Stores” button and with the power of GPS and, lets face it, magic… I’m on my way! All while avoiding having to Google a location.

Not impressed yet?.. Well, you can also use the app to pay for your coffee at most locations! You don’t even have to fumble with that pesky wallet and all of it’s Velcro tyranny . Nope, you just pull out your phone and tap the pay icon and hold your phone in front of their laser ray gun and BOOM! You’ve just paid for your coffee!

Maybe you’re one of those people that always orders their drinks in the wrong order and then gets the “correction” from the barista. That minor embarrassment is a thing of the past because now you can read your drink order to them from your Favorites just the way Schultz intended. No more “Can I have a Venti Iced Vanilla Latte with Soy?” and getting this response “You mean an Iced Venti Soy Vanilla Latte?..”

So go my caffeine addict friends, go and drink the sweet nectar of modern day life with ease and serenity… And while you’re at it, get me a triple shot.

There are hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps for just about everything — so how come the one you need, the one you know just has to be there, is so hard to find? Enter TiPb’s new weekly feature where staff and readers alike sort through the App Store and help you find just the right App for That. This week, @Sethran asks:

Do you know of any apps which will let me use my iPhone as an external keyboard for the iPad?

Unfortunately, due to the restrictions on the iOS SDK, there is no app that will let you use your iPhone as a keyboard for your iPad systemwide. However, we think we’ve found the next best thing. To find out, follow along after the break!

External Keyboard [$0.99 - iTunes link] is an app that will let you use your iPhone as a keyboard for your iPad via bluetooth or WiFi, but there’s a catch – you must have the app opened on both devices at the same time in order to do so.

This limitation is a bummer, but it works. On the iPad, External keyboard is web browser and on the iPhone, it’s just a keyboard. Just tap which fields in the browser you’d like to type and start typing away on the iPhone.

There is also a button for email. This opens a blank screen with an option to email what you type. If you choose to email, it pastes your text into a new email where you must use the iPad keyboard to complete. If you need to type text into a different app, you can copy it from this email section, close the app and paste into any app you wish.

Clearly, this isn’t the most elegant of solutions, but until Apple opens up the SDK, it’s as good as it’s going to get.

Anyone else have any App for That suggestions for @Sethran? Let him — and all of us — know.

Having trouble finding what you need in the app store? Send us an email to iosapps@tipb.com and let us know what you’re looking for, and we’ll do our best to find you just the right App for That!

T-Mobile says iPad 2 is slower, more expensive, Apple dresses it funny

T-Mobile has put up a new web page taking shots at AT&T and iPad 2 when it comes to their LG G-Slate Android Honeycomb tablet.

The Android™-powered T-Mobile® G-Slate™ with Google™ is more than two times faster than the Apple iPad 2 on AT&T and Verizon, and three times faster than the Motorola Xoom on Verizon—and it’s less expensive, too! See all the ways this entertainment powerhouse leaves the competition in the dust.

Speed claim based on comparison of devices on T-Mobile’s 4G HSPA+ 42 Mbps network, AT&T’s HSPA+ network, and Verizon’s 3G network.

iPad 2 doesn’t run on Verizon’s LTE network, so fair enough. But does it leave iPad 2 “in the dust?” I tried to do some research on the G-Slate to see just how killer a device it was, but — based on their tag page — even Android Central hasn’t written about it since April.

It looks very likely that Apple will be delivering a fully integrated voice recognition service into iOS 5 when it is released in the fall. 9to5 Mac has uncovered a setting screen which clearly shows a toggle switch for a service called Assistant. The Assistant service will supposedly take voice input to a whole new level, allowing you to control all the core operating system actions with voice. This is not the first time we have seen information pointing to system wide voice recognition and control.

“Assistant” does not work only based off a user’s voice inputs, but Apple will take information – securely – from user’s devices like location, contact’s information, and music metadata to formulate the best information to serve a user’s request. Since Apple will be taking information such as phone contacts and location, we truly think that “Assistant” will work just like the Siri iPhone application does; but fully integrated into the operating system.
Apple is said to be still working on this feature for iOS 5 and it is unclear at this stage if it will be ready in time for the iOS 5 fall release. It does look like this could be an exclusive feature for the iPhone 5 too; similar to how voice control was a feature of the iPhone 3GS but not offered to earlier models when it launched.

Guess we will just have to wait and see. I am really not that excited by the prospect of voice control. Unless it is done perfectly and works every time, it just takes longer to do things and becomes a constant source of frustration!

Sick of the iPhone taking up the space in your jeans' front pocket?  You need that for loose bills and change, after all.  A new accessory called The Move will let you carry your iPhone on your shirt.

I know what you're thinking -- you can do the same with a large patch of double-sided tape.  That's a whole lot of messy, though, with residue guaranteed to stick to both your garment and your gadget for the rest of the day (and then some).

The Move does things in a decidedly more novel way, with no straps, no tape, no velcro and no magnets.  And, no, voodoo magic isn't involved either.  Instead, it uses a cleverly-designed accessory that you place on the inner side of your shirt, opposite the iPhone.  The assembly stays in place using the accessory's overhanging edges which scrunches up a small bit of the fabric as anchor to keep things from falling.

The result is a really, really ingenious way to use the iPhone.  If you're wearing a long-sleeved shirt, for instance, you can keep the device on your wrist while you drive.  If you're lifecasting, just stick the iPhone to the front of your shirt with the rear camera facing out and you can capture everything you encounter.

Granted, the inside panel should add a little bulk that you can feel on your skin.  For the unique functionality, though, the very slight inconvenience should be well worth it.  The Move is currently seeking sponsors on Kickstarter.  You can reserve one when it goes on production for $25.

UK Apple Store Job Posting Hints at August iPhone 5, We Say It’ll Still Be September
There has been plenty of excitement over a job posting which appeared on a recruitment agency’s board this week, as it called for retail staff to join Apple outlets between the 16th August to the 29th October.  The exact wording made it even more interesting, as it specifically mentioned ‘iPhone sales staff’.
Well, you don’t need to be a ‘genius’ to reach the conclusion that certain Apple retailers are gearing up to handle an influx of customers, which logically points to a new product release.
It’s not just one retailer asking for staff either, as the opportunities are spread across the country, with many of the locations serviced only be an Apple reseller – Crawley for example – and not an actual Apple Store.
Although we’ve got no way of knowing yet, let’s assume for the sake of argument that these people are all needed to cope with the demand for the next generation iPhone.  What does the timing tell us about the potential release of the phone?  Well, aside from the obvious ‘between the end of August and beginning of October’, could Apple really be gearing up to launch their new phone before September?
We still say no, for exactly the same reasons as before, iOS 5 is coming in the fall, and lots of people are on holiday in August, not caring about mobile phones.  It would also be odd to not give at least two-weeks in-store training to new recruits before throwing them into the chaos of an iPhone launch, making the first week of September seem more likely.
What it could mean is we’ll see an Apple event to announce the new device very soon, perhaps even at the end of July.

Reckless Getaway iPhone App Review and Video – Chargin’ and Challengin’

From the team which gave us Reckless Racing comes another arcade driving game, Reckless Getaway; but here, instead of racing opponents around a track, the idea here is that you’re a getaway driver trying to outrun the police along a pre-determined route.  Along the way you must collect coins to unlock new levels, plus there are various power-ups to help you escape the cops.

Reckless Getaway has a similar 3D, top-down look to Reckless Racing, but with a bias towards the rear of the car, ensuring the road stretches out in front of you.  Although you can slide all over the road and go off-roading either side of it, the path you follow is already set, so don’t expect to lead your pursuers on a Grand Theft Auto-style chase around the backstreets.

You also don’t need to worry about accelerating or braking, as your virtual foot stays mashed to the carpet and the brakes don’t appear to work at all!  The only controls in Reckless Getaway is a left and right arrow for turning your vehicle.  The gameplay is very accessible and one doesn’t need to be a driving god to progress, although you will be needing a particular set of skills to do well.

The challenge in Reckless Getaway is to collect as many coins as possible, as these convert into a star rating at the end of each level.  For example, each level has a total of four available stars and to unlock the next set of levels, you’ll need to have earned a certain amount.  Collect too few and you run the risk of not progressing on to the next stage.  If you wreck your car, you’ll lose a star off your maximum potential score for that stage, so it’s important to stay in one piece.

Seeing as you can’t brake, missed coins are gone, so you’ll need to learn the road layout in order to be in the right place at the right time to collect them; no easy task when you’re being pushed around by police cars and other road users, sliding about on a dirt track or flying through the air over a massive jump.

Reckless Getaway evokes memories of arcade classics Spy Hunter and Chase HQ, along with traffic dodging games on the iPhone such as Lane Splitter; but rather than go for the serious approach, Reckless Getaway is all-out arcade thrills and spills, with over-the-top handling, insane jumps, a Mission:Impossible-style soundtrack and an endless flow of dollar bills spilling out of your car!

It takes a few goes to really appreciate Reckless Getaway, but give it a moment and you’ll realize it’s a highly playable driving game that’s considerably harder than it looks.  Whereas on Angry Birds the only thing you lose out on is points when you don’t get three stars, in Reckless Getaway you can’t progress any further if you don’t have enough.  I had to revisit and replay almost all the levels in order to raise the stars needed to unlock the final levels, but it’s a credit to the game that I actually wanted to, and that learning each course was surprisingly satisfying.

While I appreciated the difficulty level, others may find it frustrating though. I also would have liked to see a different mode or two, perhaps with alternative goals – smash X amount of police cars, make X amount of jumps for example – to provide the game with a little more lastability.  The good thing is, Polarbit say they’re working on other modes along with new levels too.

I’ve spent a hugely enjoyable weekend smashing, crashing and jumping though the cops n’ robbers world of Reckless Getaway, and I’m certain it’s the first of many.  The game is yours for $2.99/£1.99 and it should be right at the top of your app shopping list.

Positives:

Easy to pick up, difficult to master.Super 3D graphics and a suitably appropriate soundtrack.Game Center and universal iPhone and iPad support.

Negatives:

Does need a few more modes to increase the game’s lastability.

Overall: 4/5.

iOS 5 "whispersync" working for podcasts between iPhone, iPad?

We haven’t been able to prove this ourselves yet, but we recently received several tips from regular podcast listeners, all on iOS 5 beta 3, who say they began listening to one of our shows using the Music (formerly iPod) app on iPhone and then went to continue listening later on their iPad, only to find it automagically began playing right where they left it.

We’re going to run a bunch of tests as soon as we can. iCloud already does this for iBooks, so if Apple is rolling it out across all media, we’ll finally be able to scratch another of our outstanding wants off the list.

(If you’ve experimented with this at all, let us know the results.)

Seven Great Casual Games for Your New iPad

As the proud owner of a new iPad, you’re doubtless scouring the App Store for as many games as you can handle, eager to find as many gems as you can.  With more than 100,000 dedicated iPad applications, this could prove a lengthy task, so to give you a helping hand here are seven games we recommend you download right now.

The difference with this list is it’s aimed at the casual gamer, someone who doesn’t want to play complex or hugely time consuming games, but instead wants a fun time-waster.  You’ll notice the absence of Angry Birds, which we assume you’ve already purchased!

Pinball HD.

A fantastic pinball game for the iPad, which although is great for a few minutes play, has hidden depths thanks to several tables, challenges and a strong desire to come back and beat your high score!  The 3D graphics are excellent, but it’s the physics which really impress.  $0.99/£0.69.

Words with Friends HD.

Available for the iPhone and in an ad-supported free version, this is an alternative to Scrabble which can be played online against other, human, players.  It’s a Zynga backed game so there’s plenty of Facebook integration and the clever multiple game feature means you can be as prolific or as casual as you like.  A great way to start out in multiplayer online gaming.  $2.99/£1.99.

Compression HD.

While you could buy Tetris for the iPad, you’re better off grabbing this similar puzzle game.  In Compression HD you need to destroy your blocks as expected, except the game fights back!  The graphics and soundtrack portray a far darker and more dangerous world than the more friendly Tetris, and the unlimited levels will keep you entertained for a long time.  Free.

Labyrinth 2 HD.

What started out as a simple reinvention of the classic pub game has become a massive, community-driven, accelerometer-controlled super game with thousands of levels, multiplayer support and a level generator so you can join in the fun.  It looks really easy, but thanks to the incredibly accurate tilt controls you’ll need to be very precise to beat it!  $7.99/£6.99.

Super Mega Worm.

A universal game which plays slightly better on the iPad than it does on the iPhone.  You control a massive worm who needs to eat humans, cows and jeeps to survive; except they’re fighting back and you’ll need to use your burrowing skills to survive!  Fantastic 8-bit graphics and audio, very addictive gameplay and a darkly comic streak make this a must own.  $0.99/£0.69.

Fruit Ninja HD.

It doesn’t get much simpler than Fruit Ninja, where the idea is to slash the onscreen fruit and rack up huge high scores.  The multi-touch control is spot-on and the multiplayer mode gives the game a much-needed extra dimension.  $2.99/£1.99.

Geared 2.

Another universal app for the iPhone and iPad, here you need to connect the different sized cogs together to get them all moving, and it’s a much bigger challenge than it sounds!  Like Labyrinth, this is a game which has grown exponentially since its original release, with hundreds of user-created levels.  $2.99/£1.99.

Trying to figure out how to easily add holidays and sports schedules into the iPhone or iPad Calendar app? Lucky for us Apple actually solved this problem quite a while ago for Mac iCal users. Simply subscribe to Apple’s already built calendars and you’ll be all set. Read on to find out how!

Sure, you can manually add calendar subscriptions right on your iOS device, but finding them and tapping them all in can be a pain. iCal on Mac makes it simple, and if you’re already syncing, it can save you some time and effort!

First, open iCal on your Mac. Next, from the top menu choose Calendar and then Find Subscriptions.Your web browser should open and direct you to Apple’s iCal calendar downloads page. From here you can browse from many calendars. Choose the one you want and click Download next to the calendar name. Your computer will ask you what program you want to open the file with. iCal should be highlighted. If it’s not, select it and tap Ok. iCal will automagically open and show you the subscription link. Simply click Subscribe. You should now see the subscribed calendar in your side bar and the events should now be added to your calendar. That’s it! Simply sync your iPhone or iPad and your calendars will come down. If you have MobileMe, it’ll do it by itself with no syncing required.

If you guys subscribe to calendars via Apple, which ones do you use? I find these especially handy for things like holidays and sports schedules as well as astronomy calendars. We live on the beach and sometimes I want to know what time the sun is setting. Sure I can use a weather app but it’s nice to be able to set alarms for nights I know I’m going to be around the beach area. How about you guys, any calendars you found that you think are especially cool?

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

iTunes App Store Prices Shaken Up: UK Loses, Australia Wins

To cope with the fluctuating exchange rates and to keep its international pricing more-or-less inline across the board, Apple has taken the opportunity to adjust the pricing structure of applications inside the App Store.

The US pricing remains the same, as does the Euro, however several other countries will see a slight difference in how much new apps will cost.

Here’s how the prices in the first eight tiers have been affected in the UK and Australia, with the former seeing an increase and the latter a reduction:

In addition to the UK and Australia; Mexico, Japan, Switzerland and Norway have all seen changes too, with Japan and Switzerland also getting a reduction for the first tier – 85 Yen and 1.00Fr respectively – while Mexico and Norway both see an increase to $12 and 7.00Kr respectively.

While on the face of it, in the UK a 10p rise won’t make a huge difference to the bottom-end of the market, but a larger difference can be seen as the apps get more expensive, as a £23.99 app now costs £27.99.

The price increase don’t fit in with the dollar to Pound Sterling exchange rate very well either, as at the time of writing, a $0.99 app should cost £0.62, a price closer to the old £0.59 than the new £0.69.  According to a developer who spoke to Thinq though, UK devs ‘get significantly less money per UK sale than pretty much any other territory’, making them potentially more pleased with the alteration than the customer.

While we want to support the developers who provide us with great apps, we’d rather see an alteration in Apple’s own 30% cut of the deal than gouging out a few more pence from the consumer.
